Mastering Water Cleanup After Winter Storms in White Lake Hills: A SERVPRO Guide

12/22/2023 (Permalink)

In White Lake Hills, residents often face the daunting challenge of winter storms, which can bring many issues, including significant storm damage and water-related hazards. Understanding the risks and being prepared are essential for community safety and property protection. In line with this, SERVPRO® of Northeast Fort Worth, Haltom City, offers water cleanup services to the community. This guide aims to equip residents with crucial information on staying safe and mitigating damage during these harsh winter conditions, emphasizing the importance of immediate responses and long-term solutions.

Understanding winter storm risks in White Lake Hills

White Lake Hills faces unique challenges during winter storms, including heavy snowfall, ice accumulation, and potential flooding. These conditions disrupt daily life and pose significant risks to homes and properties, particularly through water intrusion and storm damage. Residents must understand these hazards and the impact they can have. Being well-prepared and informed about handling such scenarios is key to minimizing damage and ensuring personal and property safety during these challenging winter months.

Key weather phenomena to watch for

  1. Rapid Temperature Drops: Sudden and sharp decreases in temperature can lead to freezing pipes and ice dams, which are common precursors to water damage in homes.
  2. Heavy Snow Accumulation: Keep an eye on significant snowfall, as the weight of accumulated snow can cause structural damage to roofs and gutters, leading to potential water intrusion.
  3. Ice Storms: Ice storms can lead to ice formation on trees and power lines, increasing the risk of falling branches and power outages, indirectly contributing to water damage.
  4. Flash Freezing: Be aware of flash freezing events, where melted snow or rain quickly refreezes, creating ice buildup that can block drainage systems and lead to water pooling and seepage into homes.

Essential safety measures during winter storms

  1. Heating System Maintenance: Residents should ensure their home's heating systems are in good working order to prevent freezing pipes. Regular checks and backup heat sources are advisable, especially during power outages.
  2. Prompt Snow and Ice Removal: Homeowners must promptly clear snow and ice from walkways, driveways, and roofs. This prevents excessive accumulation that can cause structural damage and water intrusion.
  3. Emergency Supply Kit: Every household should have an emergency kit with essentials like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a first-aid kit for extended power outages.
  4. Staying Informed: Residents should stay updated with local weather reports and community alerts. Preparing a communication plan with family members and neighbors is crucial during storm emergencies.

Immediate actions to take during a storm

  1. Ensure Personal Safety: The priority during a storm is personal safety. Residents should stay indoors, away from windows, and avoid electrical appliances if lightning or flooding has begun.
  2. Secure Outdoor Items: Secure or bring indoors any outdoor furniture, decorations, or other items that could be blown away or cause damage during strong winds.
  3. Check for Water Intrusion: Regularly inspect areas prone to water entry, such as basements, crawl spaces, and ground-level doors and windows. Early detection of water intrusion can help in taking swift measures to mitigate damage.
  4. Prevent Pipe Freezing: Keep the home's temperature consistent, and consider letting faucets drip slightly to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting, which can lead to significant water damage.

Spring Cleaning is upon us!

The sun is out and it's time for spring cleaning! Make your life a little easier this year and consider calling SERVPRO of Northeast Fort Worth to help clean your home.

How can SERVPRO help?

SERVPRO of Northeast Fort Worth is the leader in water damage cleanup, fire restoration, and mold remediation, but did you know that we offer carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, tile floor cleaning, and air duct cleaning to freshen up your home for this summer.

Air Duct Cleaning

Properly maintaining your home's air ducts should be a top priority. Cleaning your air ducts regularly can increase your home's heating and cooling efficiency, as well as improve the quality of air you and your family breathe.

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprits in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your home or business.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating one or more of the following:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Odors
  • Dirt and debris
  • Pet dander
  • Other contaminants

SERVPRO of Northeast Fort Worth  Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. We will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning

Even the highest-quality carpet and upholstery can show soiling over time. Protect your investment by calling us to clean and maintain your carpet and upholstery. The SERVPRO System offers a number of cleaning options to match any type of upholstery or carpet.

Our professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil. If you wait until carpets look really dirty, the carpets may never be restored to their former appearance. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

Odor Removal

Basic cleaning services lack the expertise to effectively deodorize your home.  As experts in deodorization, SERVPRO of Northeast Fort Worth is trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. These odors can come from a number of sources both inside and outside a structure.

SERVPRO teaches IICRC technical classes in the proper removal of odors. Masking and other short cuts don't work when your odor problem is serious or persistent.

We have the training and equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. By identifying the cause of the odor and determining the conditions in which it contact any surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. Our technicians have access to several odor removal products capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly.

Life Happens, and homes get dirty. SERVPRO of Northeast Fort Worth has the industry experience and expertise to provide a deeper clean than your basic home cleaning service.

We're here to make things easier for you.

Carpet Cleaning Tips

2/14/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Northeast Fort Worth offers carpet cleaning services to residential or commercial companies. When it comes to carpet stains though, attending to the situation as soon as possible is advised. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Here are some helpful hints on spot cleaning carpets:

Always pre-test before you begin cleaning! Choose an inconspicuous spot to use your cleaning solution. Dampen a white cloth with your cleaning solution, and blot carpet and inspect carefully for dye transfer or other changes in appearance.

Food – Drinks – Blood

Rinse the area with hot water and blot with a clean white towel. Mix 1 tablespoon of #485 StainZap into 16 oz. of hot water and apply to the affected area. Allow to dry 15 to 30 minutes and the stain should “disappear”. Rinse the area thoroughly with water and blot dry.

Sticky Spills

Scrape or blot up the excess spill. Dampen a sponge with a carpet and upholstery cleaner, and blot the area with your sponge until the residue is removed. If some color remains, follow the outline above for food and drink.

Urine – Feces

Rinse the area with hot water and blot dry. Apply a carpet and upholstery cleaner to a sponge and apply to the affected area. Blot up with a damp towel. If an odor persists, apply an odor and stain remove product. If the stain remains, follow up with the steps outlined for food and drinks.

Candle wax – Nail polish

For wax, melt and absorb wax with a warm iron over an absorbent cloth and blot with SERVPRO Solvent Spotter. For nail polish, blot with a non acetate nail polish remover until the stain is gone.

Cosmetics – Ink

Rinse the area with hot water and blot. Apply a carpet and upholstery cleaner to the area and blot it dry. If any stain remains, follow up with the steps outlined above for food and drink.
